The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked way back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also recounts how the early Romans made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few you will know like basil, rue and dill. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were some recipe books which date from the 14th Century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy land, including basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created an increase in recipe books, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. When we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications were in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, more leisure time and having more money. The TV revolution brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
