The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different spices, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an eruption in publications on food, some of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
