The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes back into the far past, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Later, we have a couple of cookery books dating from the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food eaten by the upper classes of that time. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Lo Cal Mock French Onion Dip recipe.
