The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be observed back into the far past, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Later, we find a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the nobility of that period. For the decades that followed, the upper classes competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were in great demand, due to increased literacy, more leisure time and having more money. |
