The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced far back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. He also informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example thyme, rue and dill. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two interesting recipe books from the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of the time. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices created an eruption in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
