The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. Moving on, there are two books which appeared in the 1300s ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich people of the period. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new foods and tastes caused a surge in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of the West tried to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
