The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were a couple of interesting recipe books from the fourteenth century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the wealthy. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery publications were in high demand, due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and disposable income. The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Low Cal Seasonings recipe.
