The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of written recipes back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the nobility of the time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. When we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications were in high demand, as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
