The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked way back into distant history, certainly as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were a couple of cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the nobility of those days. Over the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
