The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the far past, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, we find two recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of the time. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks are in great demand, as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
