The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked back into distant history, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also recounts how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes prompted an explosion in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
