The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into antiquity, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful.

Later on, there are two interesting books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of those days.

For the centuries that followed, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books were in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and disposable income.
