The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient chefs used many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. For the centuries that followed, the rich families of Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe books were highly popular mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more spare time and having more money. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Marshmallow Treats (Fat Free) recipe.
