The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the chefs of Roman times used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and asafoetida.

For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day.

The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this.
