The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Later on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period. For the next few years, the upper classes tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
