The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into the far past, in fact as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Later, there are a couple of books which date from the 1300s : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an increase in recipe publications, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The arrival of television brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
