The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the early Romans used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know such as bay, rue and dill. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
