The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of written recipes back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, early records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius tells us how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names like basil, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an eruption in cookery books, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe publications were greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, more spare time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
