The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the ancient chefs made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example basil, fennel and dill. As we move on, there were some interesting books which date from the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices was responsible for an outbreak in recipe books, most of which still exist in private libraries. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books were greatly in demand mostly due to more people being able to read, more free time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
