The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, these, ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the cooks of his times made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including some familiar names like bay, mint and dill. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
