The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes back into history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of that period. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
