The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, these, ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an increase in books on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private collections. During the following few hundred years, the upper classes tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books are starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and disposable income. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this New Year's Eve Cocktail recipe.
