The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into distant history, in truth as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were a couple of books dating from the 1300s ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food served to the upper classes. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations created an eruption in cookery books, some of which still exist in academic collections. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
