The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. Later on, we find two interesting cookery books which were published in the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of that time. For the next few years, the powerful and rich houses tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
