The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into starters, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the Romans made use of many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names for example thyme, rue and dill. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
