The History of Recipes

It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes back into history, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful.

As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman cooks used many spices and herbs, including a few you will know such as thyme, mint and dill.

In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes prompted an explosion in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private libraries.

Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day.

The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site.
