The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful.

Closer to modern times, we find some recipe books which date from the 1300s : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are now in private cookery archives.

During the succeeding few centuries, the families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this.
