The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of cookery books dating from the 14th Century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of that time. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
