The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. In practice though, in the main part, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient chefs used many spices, including many that are still in use today like bay, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The TV revolution gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
