The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of books which date from the 14th Century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of food served to the rich and powerful of that time. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the holy lands, including basil and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an eruption in cookery books, most of which still exist in private libraries. During the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are starting to become popular mostly due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Park Place Punch recipe.
