The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of recipe books dating from the 14th Century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. When we get to the twentieth century, cooking books were highly popular mostly due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Sweet Potatoes And Broccoli recipe.
