The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are some interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the nobility of the time. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
