The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old cook books were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient chefs made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, rue and dill. For the next few years, the powerful families of Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chicken Lonac recipe.
