The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be traced back into antiquity, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the Roman chefs made use of many different herbs, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes created a surge in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private collections. The introduction of the TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Chicken Lonac recipe.
