The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius tells us how the early Romans used many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names like bay, mint and parsley. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, leisure time and having more money to spend. |
