The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius compiled some documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few you will know like bay, mint and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted a torrent in books on cooking, most of which are now in private libraries. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
