The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the Roman cooks used many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and dill.

During the succeeding few centuries, the families of Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a result cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site.
