The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes back into history, in fact as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have some interesting books published in the 1300s - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the nobility of the period. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of the West strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
