The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be traced far back into antiquity, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, we have a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they have no connection with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the upper classes. During the next few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, cooking publications were in high demand, as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
