The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, rue and dill. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
