The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Later, there are some books published in the 14th Century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of those days. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
