The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example basil, rue and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
