The History of Recipes

We can follow the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful.

Later, there are some recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of those days.

Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. These new foods and spices created an outbreak in recipe publications, many of which are now in private cookery archives.

For the centuries that followed, the powerful families of Europe competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group.

The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
