The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
As we move on, there were a couple of books from the 1300s - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the nobility of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created a surge in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
