The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed way back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians is a series of tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and parsley.

Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the East, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an explosion in books on cooking, many of which are now in private cookery archives.

By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe books are in high demand, as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and having more money to spend.

The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this.
