The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like thyme, rue and asafoetida. For the next few years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
