The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found way back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, we have a couple of books from the fourteenth century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the upper classes of those days. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to serve the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books were starting to become popular due to better eduction, more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
