The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into antiquity, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times made use of many different spices, including a few you will know like bay, fennel and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
