The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes way back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including some familiar names for example thyme, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an explosion in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
