The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of the time. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chili Pork Chops recipe.
