The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into distant history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Closer to modern times, we find two books dating from the 14th Century - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of that time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks are starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. |
