The History of Recipes

We can track the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, these, ancient cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on food, many of which are kept safe in academic collections.

For the centuries that followed, the rich families of the West competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time.

The introduction of the TV brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books.
