The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names like thyme, mint and parsley. For the next few years, the families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks were starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and disposable income. |
