The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced back into history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food served to the upper classes of that period. When we get to the 1900s, cooking books were increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, more free time and disposable income. |
